‘Adrenal support’ supplements may contain unsafe ingredients
(Reuters Health) — Many “adrenal support” supplements sold online as energy boosters may contain thyroid hormones and steroids that aren’t listed on the labels and can cause dangerous side effects, a study suggests.
Researchers purchased the 12 most popular dietary supplements for enhancing metabolism, promoting energy, easing so-called adrenal fatigue, or providing “adrenal support.” The adrenal gland makes hormones like cortisol, which helps regulate the metabolism and manage stress, and aldosterone, which controls blood pressure.
Lab tests of the supplements found they all contained thyroid hormone and most had at least one steroid hormone.
“Patients should be aware that any supplement that is sold as ‘natural,’ ‘organic,’ ‘herbal,’ ‘plant-based,’ may not be safe,” said lead author Dr. Halis Kaan Akturk of the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes at the University of Colorado.
“These words and similar ones give patients a false reassurance,” Akturk, who did the study while at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, said by email.
Most Americans who take dietary supplements buy them online or in stores without consulting their doctor, and they often rely on product labels or promotional materials on websites to decide what to take, researchers note in Mayo Clinic Proceedings.
Even more worrisome, roughly half of older adults take dietary supplements, often while take prescription medications that might interact badly with supplements and cause serious or even fatal side effects.
Taking too much thyroid hormone can lead to life-threating heart problems, bone damage, excessive weight loss, tremors and agitation, Akturk said.
Every supplement in the study contained a small amount of a thyroid hormone known as triiodothyronine (T3).
In addition, seven of the supplements contained at least one adrenal or steroid hormone. The most commonly detected hormone was pregnenolone, which was in five supplements.
People who accidentally take adrenal or steroid hormone may experience symptoms like weight gain, hair loss, depression, acne, and stretch marks as well as a potentially life-threating shutdown of the adrenal glands, Akturk said.
None of the products tested mentioned any thyroid or steroid hormones on their labels or on ingredient lists included with packaging materials, the study found.
The study wasn’t a controlled experiment designed to prove whether or how hormones hidden in dietary supplements might cause health problems.
It’s also not clear what dose of these hormones, over what period of time, might lead to side effects, said Dr. Pieter Cohen, a researcher at Cambridge Health Alliance and Harvard Medical School in Boston who wasn’t involved in the study.
“There is no question that if you take too much hormones they can have serious adverse effects,” Cohen said by email.
But the amounts in the supplements tested in the study might be too small to cause problems, Cohen said. Because the exact effect isn’t clear, patients should avoid these products, Cohen advised.
“My recommendation is to stick to the vitamin and mineral supplements that a physician recommends,” Cohen said. “If someone is feeling generally fatigued or low energy but doesn’t yet feel the need to see a physician, I would recommend trying to eat healthier, get additional exercise and get some extra sleep as the next best step rather than looking for a solution in a bottle of supplements.”

Excellent, *IF* you really need it…
I have a bit of a problem with this product being advertised to be used for food cravings — that’s just absolutely crazy. I realize that the implication here is that if you crave salt and certain types of carbohydrates, it’s been said that these cravings ‘might’ be associated with an adrenal fatigue situation, but to say that Isocort can be used to prevent food cravings is dangerously false advertising.
That said, Isocort is a natural, plant-derived cortisol supplement. In low doses, it will likely do very little to benefit someone, and it probably won’t do much to hurt anyone either. However, someone who has high cortisollevels, Cushing’s disease, or who doesn’t know how to use this product properly can do irreversible damage to their adrenal system and endocrine system. Because of this, it is very important that someone using this product knows they have an adrenal issue before choosing to supplement. All dietary supplements have this danger, but adrenal supplements can actually cause you to go into adrenal crisis if you stop taking them suddenly and you’ve been on them a long time.
I have Addison’s Disease, so I cannot use this product, but my best friend and my daughter both use it. My best friend has Hashimoto’s thyroiditis with type two adrenal insufficiency, and low stress response. She takes this with her doctor’s advice and support, thankful, as has found a fantastic doctor, who is more than willing to work with her on the thyroid natural supplementation and Isocort. Though we feel like she’ll likely be needing to go on hydrocortisone soon, because the Isocort isn’t quite strong enough for her, her energy levels, pain levels, thyroid levels and her temperatures have all been up! She used to have temperatures as low as 96.2 and she’s up to 97.9-98.1 on a consistent basis now. She’s still adjusting on Armour, so we don’t know if that’s going to get even better.
My daughter doesn’t have thyroid problems, but due to surgeries, some chronic pain from the surgeries, and a very stressful job and life situation during a move, she’s begun to show the same low-cortisol symptoms. Her doctor didn’t want to put her on HC because of her age and her weight issues, but they are trying the Isocort, since the dosages are low and it’s more natural and not exactly bio-identical… the doctor is optimistic. She gets very low temperatures, and sometimes even looked like she was cold and clammy, like going into shock. Since she started Isocort, she’s been sleeping more soundly at night and her sleep schedules have drastically improved. Her temperatures are slowly going up and are holding steady now, around 97.5. She says she wakes up feeling more energetic and the drive to work (she has to drive an hour) is much easier and she’s not nearly as sleepy.
She’s only been on it for about three weeks, and her doctor says it should get even better over time! We’re very optimistic.
The pills/pellets are small, easy to swallow, have a decent/pleasant almost starchy smell, and they haven’t upset anyone’s stomach or caused any problems at all, and have had good benefits.
I’d highly recommend this product to anyone who might have excess stress that is affecting health, but again, I also highly recommend consulting a physician or licensed health care professional before using it. This product also can have some interactions with other medications and conditions—so it’s very important to be sure whenever seeing a doctor or during an emergency that health care professionals know that you’re taking this product and also that you wean down off of it if you stop taking it and don’t just stop cold turkey.
With all that said, if this is a product you need, it’s the best we’ve found of all the similar products with the best efficacy and results.
Isocort Side Effects — What You Should Know
The two endocrine glands above each kidney are the adrenals. They are responsible for our stamina, energy, emotional balance, blood sugar regulation, coping with stress, thyroid function, allergy prevention, and regulating inflammatory processes. If our adrenals aren’t working properly, the major symptom is fatigue. This fatigue isn’t just being tired at the end of a long work day, but a constant feeling of weakness and extreme fatigue that makes it very hard to just get through a normal day.
Some natural products are over-the-counter supplements made to alleviate these symptoms and to get the energy and stamina that is necessary back to the body. Some people may try to do this by drinking more fluids that contain caffeine, but unfortunately caffeine in high doses will cause nervousness and an inability to get the proper sleep. Some products doesn’t work that way. It will bring back energy without the jitters. Caffeine has also been determined to cause fatigue because it can cause stress and keep us up at night. For those who still drink a lot of coffee or other beverages that contain caffeine while taking these products, they may think that their nervousness is caused by these products’ side effects, but it is really the opposite.
Some of the reasons that there are so few side effects are the natural ingredients that are in the product. The compounds are grown or raised organically or wildcrafted. A small amount of echinacea extract is included for calmness. The pellet base of lactase and lactose includes prunus and lomatium dissectum root isolate. Adrenal cortex that is freeze-dried and obtained from New Zealand sheep that are raised naturally is also part of the effective ingredients.
Even though there are very few side effects, they still need to be mentioned. A hypersensitive person may feel tension or too much stimulation in very rare cases. If this happens, they should simply lower their dose. Sleepiness may also be felt in some people, but that could be because they take the these products too late in the day. They could simply take these products earlier in the day.
Another important fact about any possible side effects is to be careful about how long you plan to take this supplement. Six months or less would be best. If it is taken for too long a time the adrenals may start producing less hormones than they are supposed to. Be sure to create a plan for your supplementation, and also do other lifestyle changes such as sleeping more and using less or no stimulants. The fatigue should disappear over a gradual period of time.
Adrenal fatigue doesn’t need to go on. Taking these products as directed can eliminate that tired feeling so you can feel like yourself again.
Isocort Supplement — Why This Product Works
It is no fun to suffer from adrenal issues in your life. Not only will you gain weight very easily, but you will also have a harder time shedding pounds and you will be lacking in energy on a daily basis no matter how many cups of coffee you force yourself to drink. If you’ve been feeling sluggish, fatigued and have been gaining weight, you could have a thyroid issue that requires treatment. Although there are some prescriptions you can take for this issue, there are also some over the counter supplements you can use to repair the function of your adrenal system. One of those types of supplements is Isocort. When you start the regimen of taking Isocort on a daily basis, you will notice that your adrenal function is supported and the way you look and feel will quickly change.
Not only do you lack energy when your thyroid is under-functioning, but you will also notice a number of other side effects. For instance, you might notice that your hair is thinning or very brittle to the touch. You also might notice that your skin will lose its luster and become overly dry and hard to manage. Overall, your adrenal system is meant to regulate the delivery of nutrients to these aspects of your body so when you start having issues, these are the first things to go. Isocort has been proven to, over time, work to repair your thyroid’s function so that your body can begin working to repair itself. Some possible reasons for thyroid issues are a recent pregnancy or birth as well as menopause or hormonal issues in women. If you suspect that you might have an adrenal issue, you should pick up some literature about the condition to determine whether or not to seek medical treatment.
Many people are reluctant these days to find themselves dependent on a prescription. That’s one of the reasons why Isocort was created, as an alternative to prescription adrenal treatment. For those people who are lacking insurance, they are very grateful to have another option. Sometimes a single fill of a prescription can be very expensive. On the other hand, a bottle of Isocort is much more affordable and will begin helping you just as fast. There have been many stories of people who were suffering terribly from adrenal issues who finally found a great option for treatment in Isocort.
It is strongly recommended that you see a doctor before starting any type of medical treatment, whether it’s over the counter or not. That way you will be able to know that you are healthy other than your thyroid issue. With Isocort, you will notice that your zest for life will be repaired in no time. You don’t have to live your life with an untreated adrenal issue. Instead, you will be able to do something about it and you will notice in no time that you will be looking and feeling completely normal again.
Start Low and Go Slow
Because it is often most beneficial to allow the body to slowly adjust to new chemistry, Dr.
To assess how the new supplement may affect you, begin at the lowest recommended dose for a week and see how you feel. If you’re doing fine with that amount, increase your daily dosage by one supplement and maintain that level for another week.
