Going off-road: Best all-terrain strollers for sand, gravel roads and rough terrain

1 Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 Single Stroller

One example of such stroller is the new Baby Jogger City Mini GT2. It rather doesn’t handle sand, but it can easily go through short grass (like lawns and public parks), dirt roads and gravel paths in parks.

It has three-wheel design which make it very nimble and easy to steer. Even on surfaces like cracked sidewalks and uneven pavement it doesn’t get stuck up and doesn’t bounce that much. It can handle bricks and cobbled streets for example in Italian old cities, but bigger rocks may be too difficult for it.

If you take this stroller on more rugged terrain, you and the baby will feel bumps harder than you would with a jogging stroller. However, even if the stroller shakes a bit, it doesn’t feel like it’s going to fall apart or hurt the baby.

* Although this stroller has a handbrake I don’t find it suitable for hills (mostly because of smaller wheels and insufficient suspension).

This stroller is not designed for jogging (Baby Jogger is only the name of the brand). It is a good choice for parents who are not runners, but like long-distance walks on multiple types of terrain (read more in my full review of City Mini GT).

If you’re looking for the best all-terrain travel system consider adding Baby Jogger City GO infant car seat (check it here). The adapter is now included with the stroller!

Another city strollers with versatile wheels are: UPPAbaby VISTA, Bugaboo Donkey or Baby Jogger City Select. These are great options especially for growing families, since you can expand them from a single to a double mode.

All these strollers have four-wheel design but they are still very maneuverable (maybe slightly more difficult in tight corners). As for everyday strollers they can handle grass and gravel in parks, hard-packed dirt roads and cracked pavement very well.

The suspension on each model is very good too and minimizes the impact of shocks on the baby. However I don’t recommend these strollers for beach, hiking or rugged trails in woods with tree roots.

Some parents say this stroller is even better than BOB jogging strollers. It does have one advantage over BOB Flex model – Summit X3 has a handbrake which is crucial for jogging in hilly area or hiking on mountain trials.

This additional handbrake gives you better control over the speed. This model is also perfect not only for trekking but also for strolling and running on other rough terrains like sandy beaches, rocky trails, paths in forest with sticks and bark chips, as well as cracked sidewalks.

Even if you’re going over grass, dirt roads or roots it’s still smooth and comfortable for the baby. Pushing it is still effortless and the baby can nap undisturbed. All thanks to large wheels with pumped tires and amazing suspension. Even the mud won’t stop you!

What’s also great about this stroller is its remote front wheel lock. You don’t have to bend down and get your hands dirty to lock/unlock the front wheel. You can do it by using a simple lock on the handlebar. So convenient!

If you don’t mind spending a car payment on a stroller, then you may fall in love with the Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 Single Stroller. It can hold a child up to 65 pounds in the snug and safe 5-point harness giving you a lot of bang for your buck, as the stroller should last until your child is in first grade and possibly beyond!

The three tires make this a hiking stroller with forever air rubber tires with all-wheel suspension. All three tires are the same size for a smooth ride for your baby. Stay on smooth surfaces or move around mountains, snow, and more with agility.

The hand-operated parking brake allows for easy control and steering. Fold the stroller when done with one hand to store in the garage, trunk, or your home. The storage basket allows you to take a diaper bag too, or even do some shopping.

If you plan to use the stroller for an infant, this stroller pairs with the City Go Infant Car Seat with the included adapters.

Adjust the calf support so baby can sleep with legs up or down. You can also let your little one recline to near-flat for a relaxing walk. Also, parents can adjust the handlebars for comfort and height.

The stroller even ways less than most all-terrain strollers, at just over 22 pounds.

If the other two strollers are out of your price range, then you may find the Baby Trend Xcel Jogger Stroller suits your needs and budget.

While not as high end, it includes wonderful features designed to make hiking a breeze.

Large bicycle tires allow you to roll over almost any surface while still allowing your baby to sleep. Front swivel wheels help with easy maneuvering or you can lock the front wheel for jogging. Fold up small for travel or storage.

Next, the padded seat reclines for comfort. A five-point harness keeps baby in the stroller, while a large canopy protects from the sun. Store the diaper bag in the storage basket underneath and snacks in the tray on the front.

A few other extras include a tether and a cup holder for mom.

Also, the stroller works with Baby Trend car seats. You can pick from 14 different color options.

The Costzon Baby Jogger Stroller functions a lot like the other best all terrain strollers on this list, but with slightly larger tires and a sleek design.
