There are so many good reasons to make healthy snacking a part of your weight loss plan. Wholesome nibbles and noshes can help you stay satisfied between meals, making you less likely to feel ravenous and overeat or indulge in unhealthy temptations. A healthy snack can also quell cravings and ward off feelings of deprivation, helping you ignore junk foods’ siren song. The only catch: It’s not always obvious which snacks are actually satisfying and good for you.

So what exactly counts as healthy when it comes to a snack? Generally, you want to aim for a snack with around 200 to 250 calories, around 10 grams of protein, and five grams of fiber, recommends Sarah Pflugradt, RD, nutrition expert and author of You Get One Body. That amount of calories is enough to fill you up without sending you over your daily budget. Plus, the combo of protein and fiber will help you stay fueled until your next meal.

And if you’re looking for some inspiration, you’ve come to the right place. These fast, tasty expert-backed picks fit the bill.

Sure, you’re trying tolose weight, but being negative along the way isn’t going to do you any favors.

“Before they make any changes, I recommend that my clients choose a mantra,” says Ashley Reaver, RD, a registered dietitian at Ashley Reaver Nutrition LLC in Oakland, California. “It should be positive and focus on the process not progress. Process-oriented mantras help to strengthen our habits. In the long run, our habits will be what matter the most for behavior change and sustained success.”

Beyond the how, you should also focus on the why, adds Mackenzie Banta, an ACE-certified health coach and personal trainer with the app Trainiac. “Dig in deeper. Why is reaching this goal important to you? Write it down,” Banta says.

Once you’ve selected your sentence, incorporate it into your routine for a continual reminder. For example, take a photo of the quote and make it the background on your phone. Or write it on a sticky note that hangs in your bathroom. Here are 25 expert-backed mantras that will keep you motivated, even during the most challenging moments.

Studies show that eating, whether it’s having dinner or snacking, close to your bedtime can increase your caloric intake and lead to weight gain. A 2017 study from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that eating during the rise of melatonin levels can lead to increased body fat.

“Your body is designed to function best during the daytime hours when you are most active. Therefore, you don’t metabolize food as efficiently at night,” explains Meghan Donnelly, MS, RDN.

Instead, Donnelly recommends eating your last meal three to four hours before bedtime to prevent weight gain.

Focus on protein

Protein is one of the most important macronutrients for your body. It’s not only the building blocks of healthy hair and nails, but it also aids in weight loss by keeping you satiated, boosting your metabolism, and repairing your muscles post-workout. Go for lean protein such as eggs, chicken breasts, salmon, and grass-fed beef. For plant-based protein, reach for beans and legumes, quinoa, and tofu and tempeh. Check out these delicious high-protein recipes you can meal prep for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
